It istraditionally held in late December, ending in the beginning ofJanuary.>> The main tournament features the top ten ranked hockeynations in the world, comprising the 'Top Division', from which aworld champion is crowned. There are also three lowerpools—Divisions I, II and III—that each play separate tournamentsplaying for the right to be promoted to a higher pool, or facerelegation to a lower pool.>> The tournament was first held in 1977 (1974–1976 werenot official tournaments). The tournament has been dominated by theteams from Russia/Soviet Union and Canada, together accounting for29 of the 39 overall gold medals awarded. The USSR won the firstfour official tournaments, while the Canadians put together fivestraight championships between 1993 and 1997, and another fivestraight from 2005 to 2009. It will be held for the first time in Polandfrom 15–31 January.It is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (sixoutfield players and a goalkeeper) pass a ball using their handswith the aim of throwing it into the goal of the other team. Astandard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the teamthat scores more goals wins.Modern handball is played on a court 40 by 20 meters (131 by 66ft), with a goal in the center of each end. The goals aresurrounded by a 6-meter zone where only the defending goalkeeper isallowed; the goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outsidethe zone or while "jumping" into it. The sport is usually playedindoors, but outdoor variants exist in the forms of field handballand Czech handball and beach handball . The game is quite fast andincludes body contact, as the defenders try to stop the attackersfrom approaching the goal.
